Gender is a policy priority within PAX's interventions, leveraging the peace potential of diversity and gender equality from the outset of our new strategic period (2021-25). PAX has an intersectional gender perspective, and aims to take gender-transformative approaches to our peace and security work where possible. Join us to work together with activists and partners, to formulate strategies to transform harmful gender norms with a particular focus on violent masculinities, strengthen meaningful women’s political participation and influence, and support SGBV victims and their claims. Some of PAX’s strategic partners include ABAAD, SIHA and WILPF.
You will join the PAX Gender Unit, which is made up of two policy advisors and one programme officer. Together we advise senior leadership, programme teams and partners on policy frameworks and practical applications of gender in conflict transformation and peace

Policy Advisor on Gender, Peace and Security
36 hours a week (1,0 FTE)
Responsibilities and tasks
In close collaboration and coordination with the current Policy Advisor and Programme Officer on Gender, Peace and Security:
- Develop, help implement and evaluate strategic policies within PAX and its alliances in the field of gender in conflict transformation and peace building, helping ensure that PAX has the frameworks and tools required to conduct its work in a gender-sensitive or gender-transformative way;
- Strategically initiate, develop and undertake political lobby and policy influencing, representing PAX in external platforms and networks and contributing to the positioning of PAX as a relevant player in the field of Gender, Peace and Security;
- Provide advice and guidance to senior leadership, programme teams, and partners to ensure the integration of gender across the organization in programme development and implementation, political lobbying, monitoring & evaluation, communication, and constituency activities;
- Facilitate creative capacity strengthening and learning processes, developing practical tools and provide trainings to staff and partners;
- Identify potential partners and develop proposals for new activities and innovation, in close collaboration with programme teams and partners;
- Provide input for fundraising initiatives to ensure that proposed programmes and activities are gender-sensitive at a minimum and gender-transformative where possible;
- Gather, develop and creatively share knowledge and information on Gender, Peace and Security and contribute to the capacity building of PAX colleagues and partners.
We are looking for
We are looking for an initiative-rich, creative, engaging and service-oriented gender heavyweight with demonstrable knowledge of and experience with gender in conflict transformation and peace
- Tertiary education qualification in a relevant field such as Gender, Peace and Conflict Studies, International Relations, Politics or International Development;
- At least 5 years of work experience in the field of gender in conflict transformation and peace-building (analysis, policy development, project implementation, mainstreaming, advising, support, policy influencing, evaluation, etc.);
- Experience in international advocacy linked to gender, peace and security;
- Demonstrable achievements integrating gender into broader organisational processes and programmes (peacebuilding, human rights or international development);
- Demonstrable experience providing policy and thematic guidance to colleagues and partners working in diverse and complex contexts ;
- Excellent proficiency in the English language (C2 level – advanced);
- Eligibility to work in the EU;
- Willingness to travel (self-managed, likely 2 to 3 trips a year)
- Affinity with the work and mission of PAX.
- Relevant working experience while living in conflict affected countries;
- Thematic in-depth gender, peace and security knowledge (e.g. working on masculinities, engaging men, and working with SGBV in transitional justice or peace processes);
- Active gender, peace and security networks at regional and international levels;
- Capacity development skills, including experience in developing and facilitating trainings, learning platforms, or other avenues for knowledge sharing and skills-building;
- Knowledge of another language (e.g. Arabic, French, Spanish, Dutch).
- An interesting, challenging position within a dynamic, informal, internationally oriented working environment;
- Place of employment: Utrecht, the Netherlands, initially working from home (Covid-19) and subsequently self-organizing working from office and home;
- Appointment for 36 hours per week (1 FTE), ideally starting on 1 September 2021;
- This concerns a one-year contract with the possibility to renew;
- Salary scale 10 according to the PKN terms and conditions of employment (depending on experience), minimum of € 2.521,40 to a maximum of € 4.264,80 gross (with a full-time employment of 36 hours);
- Holiday allowance of 8%
- End of year bonus of 8.3%
- Full reimbursement of work-related public transport travel expenses.
